Padma Viswanathan, an acclaimed Canadian-American author of Indian descent, has been shortlisted for the prestigious 2026 International Booker Prize. She is lauded for her translation of the Portuguese novella 'On Earth As It Is Beneath' by Brazilian writer Ana Paula Maia.

The novella, a haunting narrative set in a Brazilian penal colony, is one of six contenders for the acclaimed GBP 50,000 prize. The judges have commended the work for its unyielding examination of justice, power, and brutality.

With five of the six authors being women, this year's shortlist represents a global tapestry of narratives. The winner will be announced on May 19 at London's Tate Modern, sealing the fate of this year's literary contenders.
