Kashmiri Pandits have reaffirmed their commitment to celebrating Navreh, the first day of the New Year according to the Kashmiri Hindu calendar, in their ancestral homeland from next year. The celebration is a symbolic gesture aimed at reconnecting with their cultural roots, community members have stated.
Navreh, observed on the first day of Chaitra, is a day of immense religious and cultural importance, dedicated to Goddess Sharika. This year, festivities will kick off on March 19, with additional events planned across the country and abroad, according to Kashi Nath Pandita, a scholar and convenor of the Navreh Mahotsav Aayojan Samiti-2026.
The festival serves as an important cultural resurgence for the displaced community, bridging past and future. Celebrations will conclude at Abhinav Theatre, featuring cultural performances and intellectual discourse. Kashmiri Pandits have celebrated Navreh annually since 2021, despite their displacement since the early 1990s.
