The National Zoological Park in Delhi has witnessed an intriguing pattern in its Animal Adoption Scheme, with birds, reptiles, and mammals, including the blackbuck, remaining popular choices. An official disclosed that the scheme raised its highest proceeds during 2022-23 when 39 participants contributed Rs 20.47 lakh.
Initially attracting interest during the pandemic, the scheme's focus was on smaller animals. However, in 2023-24, despite a drop to six adoptions, these featured larger animals and produced approximately Rs 18 lakh. The subsequent years saw fluctuations in adoption numbers and contributions.
The adoption fees are structured based on species, with smaller birds costing as little as Rs 700 annually, while larger mammals command higher rates. This initiative encourages public engagement and accountability, supporting animal care and habitat conservation, with current plans to allow adoptions for shorter durations to foster broader participation.
