The new exhibit at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles celebrates Hayao Miyazaki's film 'Ponyo,' engaging children with original materials and interactive animation tools. It showcases rare artworks, production sketches, and offers visitors a chance to dive into the stop-motion filmmaking process.
An immersive exhibit dedicated to 'Ponyo,' Hayao Miyazaki's acclaimed 2008 fantasy film, invites visitors into an enchanting world. Known for his hand-drawn artwork, Miyazaki highlights a goldfish-like girl's journey towards becoming human through over 100 original materials and hands-on animation tools.
Launched Saturday at Los Angeles' Academy Museum, the exhibit displays rare artwork and production sketches from Studio Ghibli, co-founded by Miyazaki. An interactive station introduces young attendees to stop-motion filmmaking, emphasizing the film's special place in Miyazaki's oeuvre, especially for children, Senior Exhibitions Curator Jessica Niebel explained to Reuters.
'Ponyo,' inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Little Mermaid,' narrates a story of a princess who ventures to the human world. The exhibit further features hand-drawn boards of ocean life and sketches by Miyazaki. The exhibit seeks not only to entertain but also to introduce kids to the world of filmmaking at a young age, underscoring the importance of honoring hand-drawn artistry in today's AI-driven world.
