Arunima Kumar, a distinguished Kuchipudi dancer based in the UK, has etched her name in history as the first exponent of the Indian classical dance form to be awarded King Charles III's Honorary British Empire Medal (BEM). The accolade recognizes her extensive efforts in promoting Indian classical dance not only in the United Kingdom but across the globe.
In an interview with ANI, Kumar expressed profound gratitude for the recognition, which she regards as a testament to years of relentless pursuit and dedication. Reflecting on her journey, she recalled her initial realization of the cultural gap in understanding Kuchipudi upon her arrival in Britain, which impelled her to professionalize and institutionalize the art form, facilitating performances in prominent venues.
Looking ahead, Kumar's Arunima Kumar Dance Company (AKDC), in partnership with the British Council, plans to host 'Samarpanam - A Dance Offering' in New Delhi, marking a cultural exchange that welcomes young British students to India for a Kuchipudi dance program. This milestone highlights the evolution of her craft, as she—having performed globally, from Buckingham Palace to Sydney Opera House—now sees her students partake on international stages.
