A Padma Bhushan awardee, Chitnis was instrumental in the Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE), which revolutionized educational broadcasting, reaching millions in rural India, and set the stage for modern telecommunication advancements.
Chitnis also held the position of SAC director from 1981 to 1985, fostering innovations in satellite technology and remote sensing.
