Ramesh Sippy, the director of the iconic film, expressed his condolences and reflected on Asrani's exceptional performance, describing it as a role the actor was destined to play.
Asrani's character, inspired by Charlie Chaplin's take on Hitler in 'The Great Dictator', became a comedic hallmark in Indian cinema. The film, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in August, was penned by the writing duo Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar. Sippy first worked with Asrani in 'Seeta Aur Geeta' and was convinced of his talent for the jailer role in 'Sholay'.
Sippy praised Asrani for his natural depiction of the character, calling the performance unforgettable. The jailer's portrayal has become legendary, with its humor and charm enduring over time.
