Breaking Barriers: Sabri's Historic Kathakali Debut

Sabri, a 16-year-old trailblazer, took the Kerala Kalamandalam stage by storm, becoming the first Muslim woman to perform Kathakali, a cornerstone of Kerala's cultural heritage. Her 'arangettam' on Thursday was a historic moment not only for the arts institution but also for her family, fulfilling her long-held dream.

Her performance, coinciding with Vijayadashami, was described by Sabri as an 'unforgettable experience.' Donning traditional makeup and attire, she performed the 'Krishna vesham purappadu,' captivating the audience with her skill. Her father, Nizam Ammas, shared his pride, calling it a joyous occasion.

The Kerala Kalamandalam, established in 1930, has been an epicenter for preserving traditional art forms. While Sabri is the first Muslim to learn Kathakali, the institution has admitted students from minority communities before.
