In a groundbreaking moment at the Kerala Kalamandalam, 16-year-old Sabri, a Muslim girl, donned the traditional Kathakali costume and makeup to perform a nearly 40-minute 'purappadu'. Her debut marked the first time a non-Hindu girl took the stage at the prestigious 95-year-old university.
Sabri's journey to the Kalamandalam stage was paved by the support of her father, Nizam Ammas, and the encouragement of renowned dance instructor Kalamandalam Gopi. Despite initial difficulties, her passion for Kathakali, a dream nurtured since childhood, has driven her to pursue a career in the art form.
Starting her day at 4:30 am in rigorous dance training, Sabri balances her studies with her devotion to Kathakali. With aspirations to learn the intricate 'chutti' makeup technique, Sabri embraces her artistic journey, asserting that art transcends religious boundaries.
