Controversy Arises Over Tamil Nadu's Language Policy

The DMK-led government in Tamil Nadu has come under fire from BJP representatives for allegedly refusing to implement the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and its three-language formula. BJP functionary A N S Prasad stated on Monday that the state's two-language policy is unfairly prioritizing English over students' native languages.

A N S Prasad emphasized the importance of including all Indian languages as a third option in educational curriculums, citing Andhra Pradesh's chief minister, Chandrababu Naidu, as an example of effective governance. Naidu permits mother tongues to be learned alongside state languages, thus setting a national precedent.

The BJP's critique comes in light of Tamil Nadu's long history of cultural integration, where speakers of various Indian languages, such as Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam, have flourished. Despite the language policy, these communities have embraced Tamil and continued to respect and cherish the state as their own.
