The National Exit Test (NExT) promises a significant overhaul in the assessment of medical students in India, as advocated by the Resident Doctors Association and faculties from leading medical institutions. This standardized exam intends to replace existing fragmented medical exams and foster a more uniform competency-based evaluation.
NExT, initially introduced under the National Medical Commission Act of 2019, and more comprehensively addressed in the recent 2023 Gazette notification, has faced multiple postponements causing uncertainty. The editorial published in the Journal of Family Medicine and Primary Care underscores the urgent need for its implementation, citing inconsistencies and inadequacies in existing exams.
By moving towards a clinically oriented assessment model, NExT aims to enhance learning outcomes, ensure fairness, and provide a transparent benchmark for medical assessments. The proposed exam structure includes both Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs) and structured clinical exams, set to unify and elevate training standards across all medical institutions in India.
