In a move to honor the memory of the catastrophic 1905 Kangra earthquake, Himachal Pradesh will mark April 4 as Disaster Awareness Day. The quake claimed over 20,000 lives and 50,000 livestock, serving as a grim reminder of nature's formidable power.
The Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA) has outlined a series of activities from April 1 to 5 aimed at bolstering the region's response capabilities to disasters. These initiatives will focus on schools, featuring orientation programs for principals and administrators, along with widespread dissemination of earthquake safety guidelines.
Key activities such as the ShakeOut Drill, evacuation drills, and disaster preparedness workshops are set to inculcate a culture of resilience among students, teachers, and officials. Given that Himachal falls in high and very high seismic risk zones, these educational efforts are vital to safeguarding the future generation against similar natural catastrophes.
