The European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Government of Catalonia have signed a €300 million financing agreement to extend Barcelona's suburban rail Line 8, a major infrastructure project set to transform mobility across the metropolitan region.

The investment will fund the construction of a four-kilometre underground tunnel linking Plaça d'Espanya to Gràcia, significantly improving connectivity between central Barcelona and key surrounding areas including Baix Llobregat, Bages, Anoia, and Vallès Occidental.

A Strategic Upgrade to Barcelona's Transport Backbone

Operated by Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya (FGC), the Line 8 extension is designed to address growing transport demand while strengthening the integration of Barcelona's public transport network.

Once completed, the project is expected to:

  • Improve access to central Barcelona from the Llobregat–Anoia corridor

  • Enhance connections with metro, tram, and other FGC services

  • Reduce travel times across key commuter routes

  • Expand access to the eastern Eixample district, a major urban hub

Transport planners say the extension will play a crucial role in improving intermodal mobility, allowing passengers to move seamlessly between different modes of transport.

Modern Infrastructure with Minimal Disruption

The project includes:

  • Construction of new underground stations

  • Refurbishment of existing stations

  • Measures to minimise surface disruption during construction

Authorities emphasise that careful engineering and planning will limit the impact on daily life in one of Europe's busiest urban centres.

Driving Sustainable Urban Mobility

A key objective of the project is to reduce reliance on private vehicles by making public transport faster, more efficient, and more accessible.

By strengthening rail connectivity, the initiative is expected to:

  • Lower traffic congestion

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions

  • Improve air quality in the metropolitan area

The project aligns with the EIB's broader climate strategy, supporting the transition to low-carbon urban transport systems.

Part of Europe's Climate Investment Agenda

The financing contributes to the EIB Group's Strategic Roadmap 2024–2027 and the next phase of its Climate Bank Roadmap (2026–2030), which prioritise investments in sustainable infrastructure and climate action.

Urban transport projects like the Line 8 extension are seen as critical to achieving Europe's climate targets, particularly in cities where transport remains a major source of emissions.

Strengthening Barcelona's Position as a Smart City

Barcelona, already recognised for its innovation in urban planning and mobility, is continuing to invest in infrastructure that supports:

  • Efficient public transport networks

  • Sustainable urban growth

  • Improved quality of life for residents

The Line 8 extension is expected to further reinforce the city's reputation as a leader in smart, connected, and sustainable urban development.

A Long-Term Investment in Connectivity

As cities across Europe face rising population pressures and environmental challenges, projects like this highlight the growing role of public transport infrastructure in shaping resilient urban economies.

With construction set to advance in the coming years, the new Line 8 extension is poised to become a key artery in Barcelona's transport system, delivering faster, cleaner, and more connected travel for millions of residents and commuters.
