The Pakistan Stock Exchange soared on Tuesday, bolstered by optimism surrounding potential negotiations between the United States and Iran in Islamabad. The KSE 100-index climbed 2,400 points to an impressive 174,000, marking the highest level since tensions flared between the two countries in late February. By midday, market gains reached 1.41 percent, reflecting high buying momentum.
According to financial analyst Awais Ashraf from AKD Securities, the positive market sentiment stems from hopes for a second round of peace talks between the US and Iran. Reports from American media suggest that US Vice President J D Vance may travel to Islamabad for these discussions, while Iran's decision to participate remains uncertain. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia's recent release of a USD 1 billion tranche to Pakistan's State Bank further boosted investor confidence, completing a USD 3 billion aid package.
Despite the encouraging market trends, Pakistan is grappling with high fuel prices. The Pakistan State Oil faces soaring premiums on imported petroleum due to disruptions in global supply routes, with costs for shipping through the vital Strait of Hormuz reaching unprecedented levels. In correspondence to the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority, PSO highlighted a diesel cargo premium of USD 35.612 per barrel, indicative of ongoing challenges in the energy sector.
