AB Foods to Demerge Primark in Strategic Restructure
Associated British Foods plans to separate its Primark fashion chain from its food businesses through a demerger. The move, driven by market valuation enhancement, is expected to finalize by 2027. Primark has faced increased competition and financial challenges, prompting the separation for better growth opportunities.
Associated British Foods announced its decision to separate its Primark fashion chain from its food businesses on Tuesday. The strategic move follows a review of the group's structure, aiming to enhance market valuation for both entities.
Primark, with 486 stores across 19 countries, has increasingly competed with Chinese online giants Shein and Temu. Challenges were compounded by a profit warning in January, partly attributed to discounting strategies within Primark.
AB Foods shareholders will gain stakes in both demerged entities, both anticipated to join the FTSE 100. The demerger aims for completion before 2027, with separation costs projected at 75 million pounds. Analysts suggest Primark, despite its trading discount, holds scale and potential for standalone success.
