BTS Sparks Tourism Boom: South Korea's Record-Breaking Visitor Stats
South Korea saw a record 2.06 million foreign tourists in March, primarily driven by Chinese visitors and boosted by BTS's return to performances. The surge elevated first-quarter arrivals to 4.76 million. Additionally, foreign spending soared, especially on tickets for BTS's comeback tour in Seoul.
In March, South Korea attracted a record-breaking 2.06 million international tourists, predominantly from China, as reported by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The country experienced a resurgence in tourism spending, largely fueled by the return of K-pop giants BTS after a prolonged break.
The first quarter saw foreign arrivals reaching an unprecedented 4.76 million, reflecting a 23% increase from the previous year. Despite geopolitical tensions, the surge is largely attributed to the increasing global appeal of Korean culture. Chinese tourists represented the largest contingent, numbering 1.45 million, marking a year-on-year increase of 29%.
Regional airport arrivals soared by 49.7%, and spending by foreign credit card users rose 23% to 3.21 trillion won. BTS's comeback concerts significantly contributed, with fans spending 55.5 billion won on tickets and other purchases, according to Hana Card's analysis of foreign spending patterns from recent concerts in Goyang.
