India has firmly dismissed claims by the US Trade Representative (USTR) that it is involved in excess structural capacity and production. The allegations are part of a broader investigation by the USTR involving several countries, including India, China, Japan, and the EU.
The USTR's probe, initiated under Section 301(b) of the Trade Act of 1974, aims to address allegedly unfair foreign practices harming American manufacturing. However, India argues that the USTR's initiation notice lacks specific evidence and alleges discriminatory practices without a cogent rationale.
India stresses the importance of addressing trade concerns within the framework of ongoing bilateral trade negotiations with the US, rather than resorting to unilateral investigations. The Indian government has reiterated its willingness to engage constructively in discussions to resolve the issue.
