The Government of India has successfully ensured a 100% supply of Piped Natural Gas (PNG) and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) to domestic consumers, despite significant energy disruptions from the ongoing West Asia crisis. At an Inter-Ministerial briefing, Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, detailed the proactive measures taken to stabilize the sector while maintaining essential services.
By prioritizing domestic needs, the government guaranteed uninterrupted distribution of PNG, LPG, and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for transportation. Strategies included increased LPG production by domestic refineries and extending booking intervals in urban and rural areas to efficiently manage demand and supply.
The government successfully restored commercial LPG supplies to 70%, ensuring that critical sectors like hospitals, education, pharmaceuticals, and agriculture were prioritized. The Ministry reported no cutbacks at the distributorship level for domestic LPG supplies, with digital platforms achieving a 98% online booking rate and a 93% delivery completion rate through secure authentication methods.
Additional measures included increasing the availability of 5 kg LPG cylinders and organizing awareness camps to boost sales and inform consumers. Since late March, nearly 14,60,000 cylinders have been sold. A joint working group ensured continuous supply to the industrial and petrochemical sectors, with daily allocations directed to essential chemical industries.
City Gas Distribution (CGD) entities were instructed to meet 100% of the gas needs of critical industries. The government closely monitored the market through control rooms and conducted over 2,100 inspections to prevent hoarding and black marketing, resulting in penalties for over 200 distributors.
Sujata Sharma assured citizens of sufficient supplies of LPG, petrol, and diesel, urging responsible consumption.
