Himachal Moves Towards Financial Independence and Stability
Himachal Pradesh, led by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, is advancing financial reforms without hiking petrol prices. The state assembly passed a bill to levy a cess on fuel, reduced tolls for certain vehicles, and revised the Anti-Defection Law. Initiatives focus on self-reliance by 2027, aiming to strengthen the economy.

Himachal Pradesh's Chief Minister, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, clarified that no immediate petrol or diesel price hikes have been enacted, and a legislative provision for future increases is in place. The Himachal assembly has passed a bill allowing a cess on petrol and diesel, capped at Rs 5 per litre, intended for the 'Orphan and Widow' fund.
Addressing transport sector concerns, tolls for larger vehicles are reduced, and passenger vehicle entry tax is lowered from Rs 130 to Rs 100. Additionally, toll tax exemptions are introduced for specific local commercial vehicles, with concessional passes available for residents near toll barriers.
In a bid to strengthen democracy, amendments to the Anti-Defection Law were made, penalizing defectors by revoking benefits like pensions. Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu expressed confidence in reforms passed during the budget session, emphasizing development acceleration and self-reliance by 2027, with a prosperous state vision by 2032.
