The European Union is being urged to intensify its Aspides naval mission as a strategic measure to protect crucial maritime routes amidst the ongoing tensions stemming from the U.S-Israeli led conflict with Iran. The call for action came from the EU's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, who shared her concerns on social media platform, X, following a multinational discussion spearheaded by British Foreign Minister, Yvette Cooper.
Kallas expressed gratitude to Cooper for organizing a call that included over 40 countries focusing on the Strait of Hormuz. Describing this waterway as a 'global public good,' Kallas highlighted the threat posed by Iran's attempts to impose charges for ship passage, noting that such pay-to-pass schemes are not recognized under international law.
The talks explored a combination of diplomatic, economic, and security strategies to re-establish safe transit in collaboration with the shipping industry. Kallas underscored the significant role of the EU's Aspides mission, which has already supported 1,700 ships in the Red Sea, indicating the necessity for its expansion to avoid losing another critical trade route.
