The U.S. aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford, engaged in Middle Eastern operations against Iran, faces a temporary setback following a fire onboard, officials confirmed on Tuesday, marking the 18th day of conflict with Tehran.
Currently stationed in the Red Sea, the Gerald R. Ford, known as the world's largest and newest carrier, is expected to dock briefly at Souda Bay in Crete. This deployment, nine months long and including missions against Venezuela, has sparked concerns regarding the morale of its crew and the vessel's operational readiness.
Officials, under anonymity, revealed that about 200 sailors suffered smoke-related injuries when the fire erupted in the carrier's main laundry area. The blaze, which took hours to control, disrupted 100 cabin berths and required the evacuation of a service member for injury treatment. The incident raised questions about the carrier's condition, despite the Pentagon's assurance that its propulsion system remained intact and operational.
