A seven-ton meteor streaking across the Cleveland sky at a blazing speed of 45,000 miles per hour on Tuesday morning startled residents with its thunderous boom, leading many to fear an explosion.
Despite the early hour of 9 a.m., individuals in several states reported seeing the bright fireball, with the American Meteor Society logging sightings from Wisconsin to Maryland. NASA confirmed it was a meteor approximately 6 feet in diameter, breaking apart with energy equivalent to 250 tons of TNT.
The meteor's descent was initially tracked about 50 miles above Lake Erie, traveling over 34 miles through the atmosphere before disintegrating over Valley City. While the explosion caused notable vibrations, no significant debris has been found according to the National Weather Service in Cleveland.
