E-Permit: Maharashtra's New Directive for Electric Rickshaws

The Maharashtra government has introduced a new mandate requiring permits for electric rickshaws and e-bikes, announced by Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik. Previously, such vehicles were not mandated to have separate permits for passenger transportation.

The initiative aligns with a central notification issued on June 30, 2016, and will standardize regulations by requiring number plates with a green background and yellow lettering for the affected vehicles. This move is part of efforts to create uniform rules across all types of passenger vehicles, including conventional autorickshaws and taxis.

The transport department plans to implement a 'single window system' to streamline the permit process, promising easier application submissions, document verifications, and approvals. This development aims to improve industry discipline and ensure safer transport services for passengers.
