The VOC Port Authority has secured an additional 90,000 square meters of space to accommodate shipping containers amidst the ongoing West Asia crisis, according to its Chairman, Susanta Kumar Purohit. The announcement was made during a PHDCCI conference focusing on shipbuilding and ship recycling.
Purohit assured that despite the crisis, port operations remain unaffected and the newly acquired land is currently underutilized. The port authorities remain in communication with the Ministry of Shipping, terminal operators, and shipping lines to address potential issues. The government's commitment to developing India as a hub for shipbuilding and recycling aims to conserve resources and increase material availability.
Located in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, VOC Port is among India's major ports with a handling capacity of 82 million tons annually. It boasts historical trade links dating back to 123 AD. Purohit forecasts a promising 9-10% year-on-year growth in container traffic, highlighting VOC Port's strategic importance in the region.
