Driving Change: Empowering Women in Navi Mumbai's Transport Sector

Navi Mumbai is set to transform its public transport sector by training and recruiting 400 women as bus drivers under the local municipal transport service. Mayor Sujata Patil highlighted this significant development during an International Women's Day event, stressing its potential for true economic empowerment.

Speaking on the occasion, Patil emphasized the role of employment in empowering women economically. The first phase will see 400 women recruited as part of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) service, an initiative conducted under the guidance of Maharashtra Forest Minister Ganesh Naik.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation's social development department will manage the training program. Patil expressed optimism that this initiative could become a model for cities nationwide, enhancing opportunities for women in the transport sector and reinforcing their economic independence.
