Crude oil prices surged over 26 percent on Monday, marking a lifetime high of Rs 10,549 per barrel in futures trade amid global energy supply disruptions caused by escalating tensions in West Asia. The Multi Commodity Exchange reported a significant rise for March delivery, with crude oil soaring by Rs 2,186, or 26.13 percent, from Friday's close.

On the international front, crude oil prices exceeded USD 100 per barrel for the first time since 2022. The conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran contributed to inflationary pressures worldwide, pushing West Texas Intermediate futures to USD 119.48 per barrel and Brent Crude for May to USD 119.40 per barrel in New York.

Jigar Trivedi of IndusInd Securities highlighted that oil tankers were blocked from the Strait of Hormuz, prompting a reduction in output by Middle Eastern producers. Anindya Banerjee of Kotak Securities pointed out the escalating risks in the region, emphasizing the potential impact on oil and gas infrastructure and critical water supplies.
