Greece Nears Deal for Italian-Built Frigates to Enhance Naval Fleet

Greece is nearing the completion of negotiations with Italy to acquire Bergamini class frigates, a deal anticipated to be finalized by April. This move was announced by Defence Minister Nikos Dendias during a recent interview. Officials from both countries previously signed agreements to pave the way for Greece's acquisition of two FREMM frigates, with an option for two additional vessels.

Minister Dendias conveyed optimism in a statement to a Greek newspaper, expressing hope that talks with Italy will conclude soon. He anticipated the signing of an agreement for 2+2 frigates by the set timeline, seeking to bolster Greece's naval capabilities amid regional tensions.

A key component of this acquisition involves equipping the frigates with next-generation ELSA missiles. Greece plans to invest around 28 billion euros in a comprehensive defense plan. This includes purchasing a fourth Belharra frigate from France and new submarines, efforts aimed at maintaining a strategic advantage over long-standing rival Turkey.
