Airspace Dilemma: Re-routing Raises Costs for Indian Airlines

Indian airlines IndiGo and Air India have decided to circumvent Iranian airspace, opting for alternative routes for their transcontinental flights. This decision is rooted in geopolitical tensions, causing flights to European, British, and American destinations to take longer and consume more fuel.
In an official statement, IndiGo announced adjustments to its long-haul services due to operational challenges, including airspace restrictions and airport congestion. Flights to Copenhagen will be suspended from February 17, with reductions on routes like Delhi-London-Heathrow and Delhi-Manchester.
Air India remains vigilant, assessing risks and gathering intelligence from global aviation safety agencies to adapt accordingly. Despite the difficulties, the airlines emphasize passenger safety as they navigate the intricate airspace restrictions.
