The International Road Federation (IRF) on Wednesday expressed deep concerns over recent tragic incidents involving sleeper bus fires, which have claimed over 40 lives. These incidents have prompted a call for strict adherence to established bus body design safety codes.

The IRF, a global road safety advocate, pointed out recurring and dangerous defects in bus construction: flammable interiors, narrow or blocked exits, faulty emergency windows, lack of fire safety equipment, and insufficiently trained staff, which endanger passengers.

K K Kapila, President Emeritus of the IRF, emphasized the urgent need for buses, particularly sleeper coaches, to be equipped with easily accessible safety measures. He also urged the government to mandate proper training and equipping of emergency services with necessary tools to facilitate timely rescue efforts.
