Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on Monday the launch of the USD 5 billion Great Nicobar Island Development Project, destined to significantly enhance India's maritime trade. Speaking at the inauguration of India Maritime Week 2025, Shah highlighted India's democratic stability and naval capabilities as key to bridging gaps between the Indo-Pacific and the global South.

Shah emphasized the transformative potential of the Great Nicobar project, which was initiated in 2021 to advance the island in the Bay of Bengal. He pointed out that India is focusing on collaboration rather than competition, with Rs 10 lakh crore in opportunities presenting themselves within the maritime sector.

In addition, Shah revealed ambitious plans for the country to rank among the top five in shipbuilding and triple cargo handling operations. Investments in deep-draft ports, like the upcoming USD 10 billion Vadhavan Port near Mumbai, illustrate the scope of India's vision in becoming a global maritime powerhouse.
