Kavach, India's homegrown automatic train protection system, is currently under scrutiny. An official from Hitachi Rail India mentioned recently that Kavach falls short of global standards, even as the system begins large-scale installation across the Indian Railway network.
The Railway Ministry backs Kavach as a highly technology-intensive system with the highest order of safety certification. It assists loco pilots by automatically applying brakes if the speed limits are breached. Additionally, it is said to compare with Level II of the European Train Control System (ETCS).
Hitachi acknowledges India’s effort in developing Kavach but emphasizes the need for it to meet international standards. The technology is viewed as a part of India's move towards self-sustainability, aligning with the prime minister's vision for 2047, despite the predominant cost factors in technological decisions.
