India's long-awaited regulatory framework for online gaming has been officially announced, arriving with a comprehensive set of rules scheduled to take effect on May 1, 2026. Aimed to nurture e-sports and online social gaming while banning real money gaming, the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming (PROG) Act, 2025, intends to redefine the digital gaming landscape in the nation.

The newly devised rules, outlined under this framework, aim to clarify whether an online game consists of a banned money game or is an acceptable form of social game/e-sport. The framework introduces user safety measures, specifies obligations for transparency, and establishes grievance redressal mechanisms for service providers, all under the aegis of the proposed Online Gaming Authority of India.

The digital gaming sector has viewed the launched regulations positively, acknowledging its recognition of registered e-sports as a legitimate sporting discipline. Nevertheless, some in the industry voice concerns about operational clarity, particularly regarding financial frameworks and the differentiation banks need to make between e-sports and real money gaming transactions.
