Electric Surge: Tesla's Comeback Leads European Car Sales
Strong electric vehicle sales have driven a 11.1% increase in new car sales in Europe in March. Tesla's revival, along with rising registrations of electric and hybrid vehicles, marked a significant shift away from petrol and diesel cars, with electrified vehicles accounting for nearly 70% of new registrations.
In March, robust electric vehicle sales counterbalanced waning petrol and diesel car sales, boosting new car registrations in Europe, with Teslas spearheading the resurgence, according to official data released on Thursday.
The Association of European Car Manufacturers (ACEA) reported an 11.1% rise in total car registrations, a sales proxy within the European Union, Britain, and the European Free Trade Association, reaching 1,581,169 units. This marks the most substantial year-over-year increase since April 2024's 12% jump.
Electrified vehicle registrations surged nearly 70%, driven by a notable 42% spike in battery electric vehicles in March, suggesting consumer preference amid rising fuel prices linked to the Iran conflict. Countries like Germany, France, and Italy showcased significant growth in these registrations. Tesla's significant 84.3% year-on-year growth surpassed Chinese rival BYD, whose sales rose conspicuously as well. Meanwhile, traditional manufacturers like Volkswagen, Stellantis, and Renault experienced more modest growth.
