Ace the Robot: Redefining AI in Sports
Ace, an advanced table tennis-playing robot developed by Sony's AI division, has made history by sometimes defeating top human players in Tokyo. Utilizing high-speed perception and AI-based control, Ace marks a significant achievement for robotics in real-time physical sports, potentially revolutionizing various sectors.
In a groundbreaking moment for AI and robotics, Ace, a robot developed by Sony's AI research division, has managed to beat top human table tennis players in Tokyo. This marks the first time a robot has reached an expert-level in a physical sport, requiring quick decision-making and precision execution.
Previously, robots had been unable to compete with skilled human players, but Ace has changed that by playing against elite competitors under official International Table Tennis Federation rules. The director of Sony AI Zurich, Peter Dürr, emphasized the challenge of physical sports due to their need for rapid, precise, and adaptable interactions.
Ace’s architecture includes high-speed perception systems capable of tracking a spinning ball with remarkable accuracy. This leap forward in AI and robotics could have applications in other areas like manufacturing and service robotics, potentially transforming industries that require real-time human-robot interaction.
