German Voice Actors Boycott Netflix Over AI Clause

In Germany, voice actors have organized a boycott against Netflix over a controversial contract clause that permits the streaming service to use their recordings for AI training. The VDS voice actors' association stated the contract has caused alarm over potential copyright violations and loss of income.

Netflix's need for dubbed content has surged with the global success of shows like 'Squid Game' and 'Money Heist.' In response to German actors' concerns, Netflix sent a letter for clarification and proposed discussions, while suggesting German subtitles as an alternative to dubbing.

The VDS, representing about 600 members, is consulting with legal experts on the matter, citing significant resistance from their actors to the AI clause. This issue originates from Netflix's agreement with the BFFS actors' union, which mandates explicit consent for AI-generated uses but lacks clear compensation guidelines.
