Vietnam's telecom giant, Viettel, commenced construction on the country's inaugural semiconductor fabrication plant on Friday. This move marks a strategic step towards building Vietnam's semiconductor manufacturing capabilities.

Located at Hoa Lac Hi-Tech Park near Hanoi, the facility will trial production by 2027. It embodies Vietnam's ambition to master all stages of the semiconductor value chain, a complex realm traditionally dominated by China and Taiwan. The plant will cater to industries like aerospace, telecommunications, and automotive manufacturing.

While investment details remain undisclosed, Vietnam is carving a niche in semiconductor testing and packaging, with plans to significantly increase its global ATP capacity. The government eyes a workforce expansion with 50,000 chip design engineers by 2030 and over 100,000 by 2040, signaling a robust future in technology development.
