A recent parliamentary panel report has uncovered significant irregularities in the establishment of Indian Cultural Centres in the United States and France. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has been criticized for purchasing properties with known structural deficiencies and subsequent financial discrepancies.
The panel, referencing a 2022 Comptroller and Auditor General report, revealed how a 103-year-old property in Washington was acquired despite its "significant structural concerns," leading to "avoidable liabilities." Similar issues were noted with a property in Paris.
In response to these findings, the Public Accounts Committee emphasized the importance of accountability and transparency, urging administrative actions against responsible officials for the financial and structural oversights that resulted in substantial losses.
