U.S. Forms $1 Billion Alliance with AMD to Revolutionize Supercomputing

The United States, in collaboration with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), is embarking on a $1 billion initiative to construct two state-of-the-art supercomputers. Energy Secretary Chris Wright and AMD CEO Lisa Su revealed this partnership aims to address major scientific challenges, including advancements in nuclear power and cancer treatments, along with bolstering national security measures.

The supercomputers, named Lux and Discovery, are designed to enhance the country's capacity to handle increasingly complex scientific experiments requiring vast computational resources. Wright emphasized that these systems will "supercharge" progress in nuclear and fusion energy technologies, defense, and drug development.

Expected to revolutionize areas such as nuclear arsenal management and cancer treatment simulations, the Lux computer will deploy AMD's MI355X AI chips. The Discovery machine, anticipated for 2029, will integrate AMD's MI430 AI chips, promising advanced computational capabilities. The Department of Energy, along with industry partners, sees this as a blueprint for future collaborations.
