Asian Champions League Expansion: Boost for Saudi and Japanese Clubs
The Asian Champions League is set to expand its league phase from 24 to 32 teams by 2026/27. Saudi Arabia and Japan will see increases in guaranteed slots. The United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Thailand also gain more slots, while China's playoff opportunities are reduced.
The Asian Champions League will undergo significant changes with the expansion of its league phase from 24 to 32 teams starting from the 2026/27 season, announced by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) on Friday.
Notably, Saudi Arabia and Japan will both see their slots increased to five, with three automatic berths and two playoff slots. This decision aims to build on their recent dominance in the competition.
Other notable changes include increased slots for the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Thailand, while China will see a decrease in playoff opportunities after recent underperformance. The AFC's executive committee must ratify these changes.
