On Friday, UEFA issued a six-game ban to Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni for verbally abusing Real Madrid's Vinícius Júnior with discriminatory remarks during a Champions League match. Prestianni's comments were deemed to be of a homophobic nature, according to a UEFA statement.
Interestingly, three of the games are under probation, and with one game already served, Prestianni currently faces only two more games of suspension. The punishment could extend to his appearances with Argentina at the upcoming June World Cup if he is selected.
The incident occurred during a February match in Lisbon, which was paused for nearly 10 minutes after Brazil forward Vinícius celebrated a goal by the Benfica corner flag, agitating local fans and players. Vinícius later claimed that Prestianni used the discriminatory term 'monkey.'
