Morocco Clinches Africa Cup of Nations Title Amid Controversy
Morocco has been declared the Africa Cup of Nations champion after their appeal against Senegal was upheld. The Confederation of African Football cited Senegal's walk-off during the final as grounds for forfeiture. The decision, clouded by controversy, marks Morocco's second title win after 50 years.
Morocco was declared the winner of the Africa Cup of Nations following a successful appeal regarding the final match against Senegal. The Confederation of African Football announced the decision on Tuesday, citing Senegal's withdrawal from the field due to a disputed penalty call in Rabat on January 18.
Despite briefly returning to the field and scoring in extra time, Senegal was ultimately disqualified, and a 3-0 score was recorded in Morocco's favor. This decision adds to the controversy surrounding the final, including a walk-off and altercations between players and spectators, which detracted from the image of African football.
CAF's Disciplinary Board initially dismissed Morocco's protest, but the appeal board sided with them. While Morocco celebrates their second championship win after half a century, Senegal intends to take the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The Royal Moroccan Football Federation emphasized that their appeal was to ensure the adherence to competition rules.
