Masataka Yoshida's late home run turned the tide for Samurai Japan as they secured a comeback victory against Australia at the Tokyo Dome during the World Baseball Classic. The match drew special attention with a rare appearance by Emperor Naruhito, adding grandeur to the Pool C showdown.
Australia initially led in the sixth inning after a misstep by Japanese catcher Kenya Wakatsuki, but Yoshida's two-run homer in the seventh put Japan ahead. Additional runs in the eighth sealed Japan's narrow 4-3 triumph.
Emperor Naruhito's attendance was historic, being the first of its kind by a reigning Japanese monarch since 1966. The World Baseball Classic, running from March 5-17, showcases 20 national teams, celebrating national pride with Japan as the reigning champions.
