Mercedes kicked off the Formula One season with a commanding performance in the Australian Grand Prix qualifying session on Saturday. George Russell secured the pole position at Albert Park, clocking in at one minute, 18.518 seconds, while his teammate Kimi Antonelli captured the second spot despite earlier issues.
The Silver Arrows showed their off-season promise, marking their first pole since 2019. Red Bull's Isack Hadjar, finishing third, was notably slower than Russell. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen crashed in the first qualifying session, marking a tough start for the defending contenders.
Amidst a day of high drama, Antonelli's patched-up Mercedes caused debris on the track, leading to an investigation. Ferrari's Charles Leclerc managed a fourth-place finish, while various seasoned racers faced an uphill battle due to technical challenges and accidents.
