Steve Smith, the veteran batter, has been called up to join Australia's squad for the T20 World Cup. Smith fills the final spot for the injured Josh Hazlewood, according to an announcement made by the team on Monday.
Smith's involvement comes amid fitness concerns for opener Mitchell Marsh, who sustained a testicular injury during training in Colombo, as well as questions surrounding all-rounder Marcus Stoinis. Smith trained with the squad in Kandy on Sunday ahead of their match against co-hosts Sri Lanka.
The decision to include Smith was confirmed by selector Tony Dodemaide, who cited the necessity of adhering to regulations requiring squad changes to be activated at least a day before a match. Hazlewood was previously ruled out due to ongoing Achilles and hamstring injuries, leaving the team in need of Smith's experience and skill.
