Manuel Frederick, a former Indian men's hockey goalkeeper and a key member of the 1972 Munich Olympics bronze medal team, passed away in Bengaluru at the age of 78.
He had been battling prostate cancer for 10 months and dealing with depression following the death of his wife, Sheetala, a year earlier.
A recipient of the Major Dhyan Chand Award in 2019, Frederick's legacy in Indian hockey is profound, having been the first athlete from Kerala to secure an Olympic medal, and inspiring future generations in non-traditional hockey regions.
