Tragedy struck near Inter Milan's training center as an 81-year-old man in an electric wheelchair died after being struck by a car driven by the team's goalkeeper, Josep Martínez. Italian media reports say the incident unfolded after the man abruptly deviated from his designated path, possibly due to a medical emergency.
Authorities confirmed that Martínez, alongside other motorists, halted immediately to render assistance. Despite swift action from emergency responders, including the deployment of an air ambulance, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
Visibly shaken, Martínez escaped physical harm, but the accident prompted Inter Milan to cancel a scheduled press conference by coach Cristian Chivu, honoring the victim in a gesture of respect.
