PGA Tour Scraps 2026 Season Opener Amid Venue Challenges
The PGA Tour cancelled its 2026 season-opening tournament due to logistical issues after drought-induced challenges at its original venue in Kapalua, Maui. The event, originally set for January 8-11, will now be replaced by the Sony Open on January 15-18, 2026, in Hawaii.
The PGA Tour has announced the cancellation of its 2026 season-opening tournament, citing failure to secure a suitable alternate location after the original venue at Kapalua, Maui, was affected by severe drought. The decision was made after careful consideration of logistical hurdles.
Tyler Dennis, Chief Competitions Officer of the PGA Tour, expressed regret over the cancellation but acknowledged the efforts of their partner, Sentry Insurance, in trying to find a solution. The tour will now open its 2026 season with the Sony Open in Hawaii from January 15 to 18.
Originally, more than 90% of Maui County was grappling with significant drought conditions, making the Plantation Course at Kapalua untenable. The tournament typically inaugurates the PGA Tour season, featuring top players and event winners from the previous year.
