In a development that's generating plenty of buzz, Steve Smith is ready to step in as captain for Australia's opening Test in the Ashes series against England. The former captain's readiness follows Pat Cummins' admission of being 'less likely than likely' to feature due to a lingering back injury, as reported by Sky Sports. The series is poised to kick off on November 21 at Perth's Optus Stadium, leaving Australian selectors in a state of hopeful expectation regarding Cummins’ participation.
Australia's chairman of selectors, George Bailey, expressed optimism about Cummins' series involvement. However, should the fast bowler remain sidelined, the seasoned Smith is prepared to reprise his captaincy role. Smith, who has led Australia in Cummins' absence six times, securing victories in five Tests, emphasized his primary desire is for Cummins to regain fitness for the Ashes.
Reflecting on his past leadership stint, Smith said, "The team is better with Cummins in it. Hopefully, he plays three or five Tests. It's the best thing for the team," according to Sky Sports. Furthermore, Smith highlighted his readiness to adapt, stating, "I've stood in a couple of times over the last few years. It's nothing out of the ordinary." Smith’s remarkable batting average of nearly 70 as captain underscores his capability. As he prepares to return to domestic cricket with New South Wales, Smith eyes the dual goals of competitiveness and mental freshness ahead of a possible leadership role in the Ashes.
