Raging Wildfires in Georgia Threaten Homes and Livelihoods
Wildfires in southeast Georgia destroyed over 50 homes and endangered 1,000 more, sending smoke as far as Atlanta. Hundreds of firefighters are battling blazes across rural areas near the Georgia-Florida state line. Evacuations are underway, and significant damage to timber and land has occurred.
Wildfires blazing through southeast Georgia have decimated more than 50 homes and put at least 1,000 others at risk, with smoke spreading as far north as Atlanta, some 260 miles away. On Thursday, hundreds of firefighters from 20 departments were on the front lines, battling fires in rural pine forests interspersed with small neighborhoods, according to officials.
Residents in the area are under mandatory and voluntary evacuation orders, and schools have been closed at least through Friday. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency on Wednesday as the Pineland Road Fire, initiated in mid-April, spread across approximately 29,000 acres in Clinch County. Only 10 percent contained, the fire continues to pose significant risks.
Brantley County, Georgia, is also on high alert as the Highway 82 Fire expanded to 5,000 acres. Officials are concerned about the potential for winds to further spread the flames. Florida is stepping in to aid Georgia's firefighters with resources and personnel as the situation grows more dire.
