Diplomacy in Question: Ebrard's Son's Stay Under Investigation
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced an investigation into Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard regarding his son's stay at a diplomatic residence in the UK. Ebrard, who admitted his son's six-month stay, denied misuse of public funds. The situation could strain Sheinbaum and Ebrard's already complicated political relationship.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum revealed on Thursday that an inquiry has been launched into Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard. The probe seeks to determine whether Ebrard breached any legal boundaries when he facilitated his son’s extended stay at Mexico's ambassadorial residence in the UK.
Last week, Ebrard confirmed that his son resided for six months at the residence in London while studying between 2021 and 2022, but firmly denied the misuse of public funds. He described his actions as typical parental concern. Despite the controversy, his son reportedly enjoyed amenities such as a butler, cook, and cleaning staff, as reported by El Pais.
At her daily press meeting, Sheinbaum mentioned that complaints had reached the anti-corruption and good governance minister, prompting the investigation. This development could potentially strain relations between Sheinbaum and Ebrard, who previously challenged each other for the Morena Party's presidential nomination.
